Volunteer Balsam Abduwahed takes next steps to DDS
KC CARE volunteer Balsam Abduwahed, who earned her dental degree in the United Arab Emirates, arrived in Kansas City in February 2017. Since Balsam doesn’t have a license to practice in the United States, she hopes to attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, where she would start in the second year of the Doctoral of Dental Surgery Program. Balsam has been giving her time and talent to KC CARE at our Homeroom Health location since September 2021.
Balsam says that KC CARE has been an ideal volunteer opportunity. “I have a lot of questions even though I’ve lived here for five years,” she says. “It is a great place for connections and learning and shadowing. I just feel that I am the one who took a lot from this place, not that the place took time from me.”
Balsam also appreciates everyone she’s encountered at Homeroom Health works as a family and makes the volunteers feel like part of the team. “Volunteers are vital to the dental team—and they make working at KC CARE fun,” Dr. Alexis Rickel says. “Balsam has always gone above and beyond for us. She’s very passionate about dentistry and it shows.”
