KC CARE Statement on Supreme Court Decisions
KC CARE Health Center’s history is rooted in the notion that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. It is the first line of our original mission statement written by our founders in 1971. The statement still hangs in the hallway of our Midtown South location. That mission statement was established on the heels of the Civil Rights movement which would usher in much needed progress. It was written in good faith that progress would continue. Unfortunately, in recent weeks the United States Supreme Court has reversed decades of progress for both people of color and those in LGBTQIA+ communities.
Decisions increasing privileges for the historically powerful do not qualify as progress. True progress is marked by actions strengthening people with histories of unjust disadvantages.
KC CARE Health Center advocates for true progress. Our founders, Board of Directors, and employees do not believe moving backward advances our mission and commitment to health equity. KC CARE is committed to true progress and will not relinquish hard-won gains. We will stand firm in our belief that everyone deserves a fair, just, and equitable world.
